    Arpeggios Monologue

Consequences I felt like throwing my violin at the wall. I had spent hours and hours getting my scales in tune, and I was still putting my fingers on the wrong places on the fingerboard. Rubbing my eyes, I put the violin down in its case and looked outside the window. It was pitch black outside, so that meant that it was very late. I sat down on the nearest chair, which creaked as it took my weight. I closed my eyes for a moment and thought to myself “What am I doing this for? I don’t like practicing scales and arpeggios.” Then I looked down at the sheet music that was sitting open on the old, wooden desk that was leaning against the wall as though it were using it as a crutch. I looked at it and saw a mixture of scales, arpeggios and chords put…

    a. The four instruments I chose were cello, trumpet, flute, and snare drum. The cello is part of the string family, and consists of a wooden neck, endpin, tuners, fingerboard, bridge, and body. The cello has four strings: A,D,G,and C. The strings are held by the bridge and when a string is plucked or bowed it sends vibration waves through the cello producing the sound. One of the most common uses for the cello is at an orchestra or quartet. The trumpet is part of the brass family and consists of…

    The Violin Research Paper

The violin and the viol both had major advantages over one another. One advantage of the violin is its convex back (which curves outward) and its F-shaped sound holes, which allowed the violin to produce a broader sound since it allowed the violin to vibrate more (Carlin 34). This design was better than the viol's flat back and C-shaped sound holes, which prevented the viol from producing as much sound as it should have been (Carlin 34). However, the viol was easier to play in tune, since it had…

I started playing violin when I was 5 years old. The first time I ever picked up a violin and plucked a string, I fell in love. I nearly pulled the string away from the fingerboard and the sound was loud and obnoxious, but I loved it. I took 2 lessons a week with a private instructor that cost way more than my family could afford, and eventually, I could play complex and beautiful pieces. I’ve gone through so many instruments and bows that by the time I was old enough to have a job, I was…

What a great show from the veteran super group The Cookers. They presented their magnificent repertoire in two sets at the Nublu Jazz Festival. The band comprises an inflammatory frontline composed of Billy Harper on tenor saxophone, Donald Harrison on alto saxophone, and trumpeters Eddie Henderson and David Weiss. The respectful rhythm section brings us George Cables on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Billy Hart on drums. For tonight’s concert, pianist David Bryant, 33, replaced the…

The history of the violin is pretty cool. People believe that the violin originated from Italy in the early 1500s. It seems to have been evolved from the fiddle and rebec considering they were stringed instruments. The person who is known to be the one who made the instrument is Andrea Amati. Others were recognized also such as Gasparo de Salo and Giovanni Maggini. They were both italians (I guess their not only good for making food.) but during the 17th and early 18th century violin making…

This makes it look more like the renaissance lute. It is tuned at a higher position but has smaller string strength. The same type of instrument is used in Iran. This is where it was known as barbat. It is less used nowadays. The modern version has a longer neck whose fingerboard is slightly raised and made of 5 courses. The tuning style of the Arabian oud can be described as; D GG AA d’d’ gg c’c’. The lower course of the oud is made of one single or drone string. Sometimes the string is…

wealthy homes and courts, and amateur lutenists were learning the skill via printed music that had been written especially for the instrument. This golden age of the lute was turned upside down when more courses kept being added to the instrument and different tunings appeared. The new courses proved to be more hazardous than helpful, as it proved to be difficult to achieve the beautiful tone associated with the lute from these new courses. The neck of the lute was too short to produce the…
