I believe that hard work pays off, almost every time. Last winter, I joined my local select basketball team, Ballard select. I didn’t have to try out, the coach just saw me play and asked me to join the team. After a few months of playing with Ballard, I became very committed and grew very close to my teammates. Finally spring came, and so did try outs. My coach Taylor, and the founder of Ballard Select, Sara, had told us only eight of the twelve girls on the team were going to make the team this spring. Everyone on the team had to try out again, but I wasn’t worried, I was sure I was going to make the team. So, day one of tryouts began and I played really well and grew even more confident I would make the team as the next few days of tryouts approached. I won when we played one on one, and I scored more than half my team's points when we scrimmaged. I worked harder than I had worked in practices for a long time, to show the coaches my skills. It was the last day of tryouts and I continued hustle and played my game. When tryouts were over I went up to Sara, and said thank you and asked her if she knew if I was going to make the team. She said probably, but they weren’t sure because I apparently had a bad attitude and messed around at practice. When I heard this I was confused, if not shocked. I’m a loud and energetic person and I like to talk to my friends at practice, but I focus better than half the team. Also, I generally have a good attitude and am a good teammate. I told…

“A Jury of Her Peers” by Susan Glaspell was written in 1916, a time where women had virtually no rights and any minor movement to tirade against the upper echelon was strongly disparaged. Being a woman during this time period was, therefore, nearly impossible. Glaspell was born in 1878 and became well-educated, attending Drake University despite the presiding belief that college made women unfit for marriage. She became a reporter, and it was not until she covered the John Hossack murder story…

been the same. But by this time, I had reflected about my life before and after the incident and this taught me that being true to that was much more important than any friendship, especially a friendship that is very unsupportive. These months allowed me to solidify my opinions, views and most significantly decide the kind of person I really am. These new discoveries also enabled me to understand the kind of people that I wanted to surround myself with. People that support one another, and make…

“The Speech of Polly Baker” by Benjamin Franklin is a leading example of how American writers challenged notions of social injustice and attempted to bring social change. Franklin writes this fictional story about a woman being convicted for giving birth to an illegitimate child and criticizes the laws that punish them. Polly Baker has been convicted of this same crime four times previously but each time, argues that she is not the only one responsible for this transgression. Women are…

Emerson does not believe himself a poet so much as a Sydney-an commentator, begging for the rise of an American literature and, by extension, an American theory of criticism. Although we have already discussed The Poet as if it were poetry, we will grant Emerson his wish to be a commentator and investigate the poet as an abstract figure. Until this point in the history of criticism, the poet has been described at best as the receiver of a gift from God, the gods, or the muses - a person…

world.” The speaker has a different mind set than that of a human, so he may not be human. As a character, he is a thinker, which in this poem, works well with his relaxed disposition.
