A Comparative Analysis of Ross and Nisbett’s “The Power of Situations” and Fromm’s “Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem” Introduction Ross and Nisbett disagree with Fromm about the causes for obedience or disobedience to authority. It states in the introduction to “The Power of Situations”: “Erich Fromm conceives of obedience and disobedience as products of one’s character or of one’s moral choices” (627). This is suggesting that Fromm believes a person will obey or disobey based on their personality traits. He states: “All martyrs of religious faiths, of freedom, and of science have had to disobey those who wanted to muzzle them in order to obey their own consciences, the laws of humanity, and of reason” (623). People are willing to not obey an one authority if they are following a greater authority. People will not conform to the ideas of the leaders of society if their personal beliefs differ from those of the leaders. If they accept the rule of authority it is because they agree with the opinions of those they see to be in authority. This will cause them to do what they believe to be right. However, Lee Ross and Richard Nisbett take a contrasting view to Fromm’s ideas. They claim in “The Power of Situations”: “People’s inflated belief in the importance of personality traits and dispositions, together with their failure to recognize the importance of situational factors in affecting behavior, has been termed the “fundamental attribution error” (629).…

I have always been a K9 lover. It never fails to amaze me how ordinary people trade in dogs for these hissing, stubborn, self-centered felines we call cats. Dogs embody characteristics that we wish all humans could possess: unconditional love, joy, unabashed love of life, and never being one to rush to judgment. Dogs have a way of finding the people who need them, filling an emptiness we don 't even know we have. Ryder is my good boy. Ryder is an Australian Shepherd, who has coloring the same…

It all started one morning I was getting up and going in the kitchen to get coffee. I heard a silent groan and I got scared. I went and checked what it was and I saw a man who looked like he got burnt. So I slowly went back in my room and woke up my husband Junior. When I woke him up he was confused on why I was so scared. That’s when he sat up and asked me what happened. I froze in a dead because I was too scared. Then I started stuttering because I was trying to explain it. “I I I saw a guy…

Public Financing of Sports Stadiums “Never support public financing of a sports stadium. You as a taxpayer are virtually guaranteed to lose that game.” Over the past few decades, the debate over whether or not sports stadiums should be publically financed has caught more attention with tax payers. Many financial economists have come to agree that publicly financing sports stadiums is a bad investment. The public should not provide financial support of sports stadiums because they have little…
Edward Abbey's Great American Desert Environmentalist and desert-lover, Edward Abbey in his essay “The Great American Desert” warns readers about the perilous dangers of the American deserts while simultaneously stirring curiosity about these fascinating ecosystems.
