Technology is changing with great speed and is very evident in the healthcare settings. Emerging technologies that will change the practice of nursing in the next decade will be genetics; genomics, less invasive and more accurate tools for diagnoses and treatment, 3D printing, robotics, biometrics and electronic health records. Health professionals will have to be skilled or trained to develop and acquire, use and integrate these emerging technologies. (Carol Houston, MSN APA) The technology of genetics and genomics (a branch of molecular biology) will help to treat those conditions that have a genetic and genomic element which is influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors. Many nurses in practice know little about genetics and genomics and will lack the competence to effectively counsel and teach patients in this field. Less invasive and more accurate tools for diagnostics and treatments will result in lower patients’ risk and costs (Carol Houston, MSN APA). The rate of which noninvasive and minimally invasive tools that are being introduced, make the competency very challenging to nurses. 3-D printing is essential for replacement organs in the future. 3-D printing is expanding in many areas in the near future and potential growth is in the medical field. Researchers are just getting started to create artificial…
