Behind my old tan house on McClure road is an open opportunity to have as much fun as you want, and as a kid I took advantage of that. I loved going out to just use my senses and explore. I would see how many different animals I could see or hear. I would listen to the birds hum their songs, and hear the chipmunks run aimlessly through the woods, cracking sticks every step of the way. Who knew such little animals could make so much noise! Sometimes I even thought they were bears! I never did see a bear. On multiple occasions I saw deer though! I remember feeling the wind in my hair and the dog right on my heals. I would come out at the end with leaves and sticks in my hair, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I always felt so fast running in the woods with the dog. Sometimes we didn’t make it all the way to end without staining our fingers with a quick snack of fresh berries. One of my favorite parts of that house was eating the berries off the bushes and going home with stained…

Chapter Five Once I get back to our campsite, papa is gone. Probably gone to gather more wood for fire. Hopefully, he would get back soon, so we could eat the squirrel quickly. To burn time, I look for berries, roots, and plants to add to our future meals. I find a large, starchy root, which smells vaguely like basil. Interesting. I start to head to the campsite, thinking papa should be home by now, shooting a small ground animal on my way,not knowing the name of, much less have seen before.…
