Clean coal is a technology of greatly disputed value with some believing it is the way of the future while others believe it merely applies a band-aid to a gunshot wound. Clean coal technology is not the most economically or environmentally practical method of energy production causing me to advocate for the increased use of alternative technologies. Any technology that reduces the environmental impact of burning coal falls under the clean coal technologies umbrella (Halber, 2008, para. 1). The two most common categories of these technologies deal with the removal and storage, most commonly in subterrestrial caverns, of carbon dioxide before or after the burning of coal or the removal of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, the cause of acid…

Coal companies are making big bucks by digging up land in search of coal and in the process they’re barely cleaning up the mess they made. They have the money to do the cleaning up, but they don’t want to pay it. Even regulators are fearing a one billion dollar coal cleanup bill. If it was up to the coal companies they would leave the $1 billion bill for the taxpayers to deal with. It makes the argument that the use of coal can never be ‘clean’, and that it shouldn’t be an argument that it could be, rather the argument should be can it be ‘clean enough’. Coal is the main argument because of the total amount of emissions using it alone gives off. It produces 39% of the global carbon dioxide emissions. This is why we need to make the shift to cleaner renewable energy or find a way to store the carbon emissions underground. But even that may not solve all the problems.…

Ernest Hemingway is one of the most revered and studied American authors, famous the world over for his extensive bibliography of short stories and novels. However, Hemingway was a deeply troubled man, and many of his works are monuments to his struggles with depression. “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” is an ideal example of Hemingway’s nihilistic view of the world: it appears to be a mirror into his very soul. The theme of “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” is decidedly nihilistic: life, human ideas…

these problems affect their daily life and affect how people react near him. In Hemingway’s A Clean, Well-Lighted Place a dark loneliness fills the void of man’s solitary existence, while in O’Brien’s 2006 film Isolation, physical remoteness allows for the entrance of a sinister shadowy evil, each demonstrating, in its own way, nature’s need to fill a vacuum. The inner struggles that the old man had gone through had been felt by his presence in the cafe. The young waiter does not know why the…
