Binghamton’s Carnegie Library nestles snugly in the shadows of city hall and the Security Mutual building on Exchange Street. Although no longer in use, the ‘old library’ (as the residents refer to it) stands as a reminder of Andrew Carnegie’s philanthropy, as well as the city’s former glory. The building’s architecture is entirely Classical, utilising Greek and Roman traditions to create an inviting exterior for the city’s library. The library’s Grecian influence is obvious at first glance, as four massive Ionic columns tower above the short flight of steps before the library’s door. These steps run perpendicular to the shallow porch behind the columns. While the portico offers some standing space, the axiality of the front steps encourages…
Andrew Carnegie is a philanthropist of his time, and helped shape America for the better. Although I believe this to be true, it is not a statement made without appraisal or periods of ambivalence. In researching the world’s richest man, it’s easy to see him as the good guy in his youth, as a young man, and eventually in his retirement. It was during his industrial revolution where Carnegie seemed to be beside himself as a robber baron. Still holding his core beliefs and values throughout his…

as conditions to which we must accommodate ourselves, great inequality of environment; the concentration of business, industrial and commercial, in the hands of a few; and the law of competition between these, as being not only beneficial, but essential for the future progress of the race.”(-Andrew Carnegie) The book Andrew Carnegie Story written by Charlie May Simon's, Published on 1965.. Libraries cost money to build and maintain, regardless of how they are organized, and at the turn of the 20th century if you wanted a library you would write to Andrew Carnegie. Andrew Carnegie took the fortune he made in steel and turned it around to support libraries for everyone without looking at color. In areas of intense segregation, African Americans became fed up with the substandard quality of the library they were allowed to use as opposed to the library for white people. Carnegie…

experience/knowledge to deal with the task at hand. This is a factor that I feel I am currently experiencing in my library system with some of the recent changes and shuffling around of staff in different departments; there are just simply people who cannot perform the expected tasks and they should not be in those positions that expect them to do so. This is…
been a nice day to go library and get some books. Being a geeky teenage girl, I love to read anything from a mystery to a good thriller. My day started off great! A big bowl of Frosted Flakes, a bright early morning and a little bit of television. Nothing could go wrong… or could it? “Oh crap, where’s my library card”.I yelled in frustration. I began to search through all my pockets and in between my father’s car seats. After fifteen minutes with no success, I turned towards my father, Oscar,…
