Yvon started getting into the business by making chrome molybdenum steel pitons which he made out of reusable hardware. Yvon had a small shop in his parents’ Burbank, California home and sold his pitons for $3.00/pair. In 1965 Chouinard could not continue to hand make all of the pitons due to the demand of his products so he went into business with Tom Frost an engineer who was interested in his design aesthetic. By 1970 Chouinard Equipment was the biggest supplier of climbing tools and hardware in the nation. While rock climbing tools were growing more and more popular climbers continued to wear cut of khaki pants and generic tees. Wearing a multicolored striped rugby shirt that would protect his arms and neck Yvon set out to climb in Scotland. People went crazy over Yvon’s shirt and wanted to wear brightly colored high quality shirts to climb in as well. Yvon started ordering clothing through the company and within a few months shirts, gloves, and hats were being sold and re-ordered by popular demand. In 1973 Patagonia Inc. was started and since then has opened 53 strictly Patagonia brand stores and can be found in over 350 stores nationwide.
