For this paper I chose to interview a friend of mine, a former co-worker, Ramesh. We worked together several years ago at Wal-Mart. I would spend my breaks with him and his wife. His culture is very interesting to me as well as his opinion of his home culture. He has lived in America for many years, he moved here with his new wife as a young man to go to college. Ramesh is from a very wealthy Hindu family in south India, his father is the prince over a territory there. He moved here with his wife in the early 1970’s. He spoke of the beautiful surroundings and the lush gardens his mother had that had a small creek running though it, a rare sight in the desert. He described the heat and how the temperature was always like American summers, even hotter sometimes. Ramesh described the living conditions of the less well off as very harsh. He remembers India always being at war during his youth. The poor were very poor and health care was not a common thing. Many people became very sick and even died because of this. He told a story of how his wife’s uncle was killed just a short distance from her house by gorilla soldiers. As a child he played there at the palace where his father was prince. He played cricket with his friends; this is a game like American baseball. Because his father was a prince he was expected to behave a certain way and while he did not have responsibilities like those of a typical youth, like chores and cleaning his room, he had other responsibilities and…

maintained the highlighting and mentioning a note wherever it had extra something that received my attention. I am sure, there are many places I highlighted or did write the note, if I try to cite them this could go a long way, I know her write up deserves a separate article. Tanwi should be branded a matchless to any writer from New York City, even she did compete the Brooklyn of NYC! which is absolutely an addition to American literature, I believe. The way she followed the descriptions…

Middle and upper-class Hindus found it difficult to suddenly be treated as inferior members of society when compared with Muslims.” (p.53)The residents of both India and Pakistan…

The ‘silence’ that surrounds the Bengal Partition is qualified by Ashis Nandi as a ‘psychological defence’ (xii). He argues that the educated, urbane people who were dazzled by the scope of two brand new states banished the memories of Partition and decided to conduct the affairs of the new states on the ruins of the past: armed with the fragile defensive shield of anti-memories. It is important to note here how the different classes responded to Partition in different ways. Bengal Partition…
