The Inescapable Void and Ex Oblivione No splendid paradise, no eternal torment, no divine deity; only oblivion and an inescapable void. This is H.P. Lovecraft’s Ex Oblivione prose poem’s main message, but horror enthusiasts are left wondering why he chose to convey this message in particular. Some might say that this was meant to be a work of pure fiction; a poem that does not parallel Lovecraft’s life in any way. Others might say that this poem is a commentary on Lovecraft’s beliefs on humanity and attitude about death. Further analysis of this work reveals that it is a somber poem highlighting Lovecraft’s forlorn character, atheism, and copious amounts of depression. We can see Lovecraft’s disbelief of the world and extreme cynicism being shown in the poem. His explanation of what was beyond the gate in his poem makes it very clear that there was nothing there; an endless void, oblivion. Lovecraft has been known for his cynicism and hate of the world. He gained a sort of cult following because of it; his horror elements coupled with doleful philosophies made him immensely famous amongst horror readers across the world. In a letter to August Derleth we can see Lovecraft stating very clearly that “everything. . .is trivial”. He is not shy to state that he is “the profoundest cynic of them all” because he “[recognizes] no absolute values” (220). This sentiment is reflected in many of his works and particularly in the Ex Oblivione. But as the gate swung wider and the…

The Dark Night trilogy set the gold standard for the characters Batman, and the Joker. Every casual movie goer or critic would tell you that the most recent portrayal of each of these characters isn’t as good as the Dark Night Trilogy characters. With the flop of Man of Steel, and Batman vs. Super Man, Warner Brothers, the company making DC films, wanted to take a lot of control away from directors, and unfortunately the first movie to take such directions was 2016’s “Suicide Squad” by David…

the big move from New York to Texas. The house we lived in was my childhood home and my husband and I shared it for fifteen years together. This was not going to be an easy task. Growing up in my childhood, I never really made a lot of friends. In my early years of education, I was very sociable, but to my dismay, people just didn’t seem the friendly type. I never really did feel safe in the school district. That being said, there was only one place that I would always go to relax and get the stress of my mind, and that would be my humble abode, my home. Because I walked to school on a regular basis, I always knew where to go, even during the renovations. I mean, I could…

This selection was written to describe the conditions of tenement houses, overcrowded slums that filled New York City during the late 1900’s. The first sentence of this selection states, “The first tenement New York knew bore the mark of Cain from its birth, though a generation passed before the writing was deciphered.” The author means that tenement houses were “cursed,” or were terrible creations from the very beginning, but this was ignored and not tended to for a long time. The owners of…

we arrived to Dayton it was dark. Unfortunately for us, the house were we going was not in the city but the outskirts. Once we showed up at the house, we were both pretty creped out. A really run down house in the woods, on top of a hill, no trespassing signs everywhere, and only one porch light on. It was the kind of light that is plugged in, but hanging by its wires swinging back and forth in the wind. The sunroom on the house was collapsed, only two walls were able to hold the ceiling up. One…
