Shelly is probably the highest quality deer head that has ever been found in a high school industrial technology department dumpster. This summer, a head of a buck was thrown out by the board office secretaries of Buckeye High School in Medina county. When asked why they would throw out such a high-quality deer head, they responded that it creeped them out and made them uncomfortable; although, it is evident that many feel otherwise. Benjamin Lutman, Buckeye Industrial Arts teacher talks about his thoughts upon first seeing Shelly, “Why are they throwing out such a quality stuffed deer. Shelly, as you named her, was such a nice thing.” Mr. Lutman describes Shelly, “Um... well she is not a she, Shelly is a he and has antlers and is a very…

to capture in her drawing. Through the naïve viewpoint of the little girl in the drawing, the deer signifies the characteristics that are desired in her childhood adventure. Growing up in a Christian home, I remember going to church every Sunday – singing praise and worship songs. One of my favorite hymn song is “As the Deer,” a song about how our souls long for God. ‘As the deer panteth for the water So my soul longeth after thee Thou alone are my heart's desire And I long to worship thee…

In June of 1937, Child and Thorneycoft made another attempt at vitrification at Rahoy, the site of a Dun at the entrance of Loch Teacuis in Scotland. This time, they used the actual materials used in construction at the Dun, which had contained signs of ancient vitrification. The wall was built, facing west, across a trench which had been dug into the vitrified rampart during earlier excavations. The construction of the Rahoy wall was hampered by a lack of suitable timber and was considerably…

Today Halloween is the second most commercialized and profitable holidays in today’s world, where trick or treating, costumes, and decorations all are apart of some of the favorite things we like to think about with Halloween. Although in Rick Bass’s short story Antlers, the story starts with the town’s annual Halloween party, where the traditions they have are a little less traditional. In the story the party itself holds a very symbolic meaning and has many underlying tones throughout the…

The Antler orogeny occurred in the Mississippian passive margin of the sialic North American continent in Nevada and probably in Idaho (Speed and Sleep, 1982). Speed and Sleep (1982) proposed an Arc-continent collision model for the Antler orogeny. In their model they assume that The Roberts Mountain Allochthon formed as a result of the large accretionary prism underthrusted by the continental slope and outershelf. The vertical loading and downflexing of the continental shelf by the allochthon…

How Deer Got Their Antlers. One day a family of deer were roaming around the forest looking for some fresh fruit to eat. The older deer would sniff around trying to find some fruit to eat as they put the fruits they did find in woven baskets made by their friends the bevers. As many of the young ones played around, they made a lot of ruckus from messing around during the fruit search; the fawns were then scorned at by the elders. They were put on patrol duty, in which they have to watch out for…

Ernest Hemmingway once said “When writing a novel, a writer should create living people; people not characters. A character is a caricature.” This quote to me exemplifies the importance for an author to create lifelike characters that are not static and are instead dynamic, moving, changing. In Rick Bass’s short story Antlers all three of the main characters can be seen as almost living people who share a genuine connection between their environment and between each other. Bass shows the…

This is known as “parallel walk” in which each bull assess the others body/antler size and strength. Bulls will also roar as an an attempt of intimidation. The vocalness of these roars, in turn, are a reflection of their mass and robustness. If neither opponent backs down, the two will compete by wrestling. Bulls will sometimes sustain severe injuries including death during this sparing of antlers. This means a small frail bull with larger antlers would most likely not last even the first…
