Eiheiji Temple
- the Soto Zen Center founded by Dogen in 1243
- Dogen was equipped to establish after "great - enlightenment" with Rujing
- Duties handed to Koun Ejo
"Mind Only" (cittamatra)
- Mahayana Doctrine, which emphasizes consciousness in the experience of reality
- the mind-only posits a "store consciouness" that contains karmic seeds of all sources of experiences.
- everything occurs through the mind, including sensations and motivations
Buddha-nature
- all Buddha's virtues and experiences are innate within all beings
- means that everyone can be Buddha
- Buddha-nature = reality, so you must have no conscious thought: Linji said 'kill the buddha'
Linji/Rinzai Sect

Shobogenzo

Hongaku theory

Kanhua
- practice advocated by Dahui
- a public case to challenge + instruct students, especially in the Linji/Rinzai traditions
- Dahui urged the kanhua for laypeople, because it was suited for busy lives.
Sabi
- means rust, or earthly
- sabi captures the idea of natural aethetics and thusness (tahtagata)
- Sabi appear's in Basho's work to symbolize loneliness
Koan
- means "public case"
- pedagogic tool for religious training, entailing shocking verbal encounters
- often has a critical phrase (huatou)
- brings meditation and language together
Shikan taza
- “sitting meditation”
- monks are instructed to practice this at the Soto monastery, once ready to progress beyond stage of "following their breath"
- a practice concentration maintained without focusing on any object except mind-ground itself
Bodhisattva
- "one who is intent on Bodhi"
- before Maha. Buddhism, this refers to Buddha before enlightenment
- after Maha. Buddhism, this becomes the ideal, seeking enlightenment for all living beings
- Maha. has many of these in multiple realms
Satori
- deep enlightenment
- attained once a Buddhist apprehends Buddha-nature
- the conscious self is eliminated - actions are performed automatically + spontaneously
- Dogen experienced this when Rujing struck the student next to Dogen, and shouted "cast off mind+ body"
Northern School
- school in Ch'an Buddhism associated with "gradual enlightenment"
- Shenxiu is said to have founded this school
- Shenhui commented that this "School's teachings are methods of the ignorant"
- school occurred occurred in early Chan (ca 600-900
Gradual Enlightenment
- doctrine associated with the Northern School
- Shenxiu advocated this
- this idea is apparent in Shenxiu's verse about people striving to polish their mind, like a clear mirror
Haiku
- Japanese poem meant to express the transitory nature of life
- Haiku often uses seasons to indicate time
- key components include: suchness (tahtagata), moment, spirit
- also japanese words for the components are: jitsu (substance), essence (kyo), breaking word (kireji)
Ordinary Mind
- this phrase means the mind is not bound by time
- the original Zen saying was by Nansen, who said "Ordinary Mind is the way"
- Dogen uses this to explain how a certain state of timeless mind is important for Zazen practice
Huayan
- largest temple of Liao and Jin dynasties in China
- the temple is located in the west and faces east, because the race of qidan believed in ghosts and gods
- the sides of the main hall have two gates - one quadrate and the other, a circle. the quadrate = Avatansaka Sutra' philosophy is so profound, and the circle = non-obstruction of principle + phenomena
Dao (the Way)
- signifies the fundamental nature of the universe
- the metaphysical concept originating with Lao Tze
- Lao Tze says this is not a name for a "thing", but the underlying natural order
- this is like a well, used, but never used up
- it is the eternal void filled with infinite possibilities
Zazen
- sitting meditation
- correct practice includes: sitting on the floor with legs in full lotus or half lotus position, spine upright, mouth closed, breathing through the nose, eyes gaze downward at a 45 degree angle
- Wei-yen commented to his master Shih-tou that he was doing Zazen "not for anything"
Kensho
- glimpse of enlightenment
- not clearly defined because one can see into one's nature, but dimly or with great clarity - the gradations are subtle
- after this experience, one will see the order of the universe as right side up, instead of lop-sided
Heart Sutra
- a sutra that focuses on the doctrine of sunyata, or emptiness
- only 270 Chinese characters
- most popular and widely used religious text in East Asia
Patriarch/Ancestor
- the Ch'an masters in Buddhism listed in linegae system
- Bodidharma is the 1st in China
- order can start in India or China
- advocates of Chan started the lineage system with Bodidharma to polemically declare Chan as superior to all other schools.
Emptiness (sunyata)
- Emptiness is based on the impermanence of objects, and because things are not permanent, they are inherently empty
- you can’t find the true essence of an object
- there is co-dependent origination - things are made up of parts
- Emptiness is like Suzuki says, clear water with a few waves.
Indra's Net
- metaphor to describe emptiness, co-dependent origination
- phenomenon is interconnected, like the net
- the jewels in the net, which when one looks through, one can see the other jewels
