X Task B 1 Summary

Used to:

Develop the ability to compensate for drift during turns, orient the flightpath with ground references, follow an assigned ground track, arrive at specified points on assigned heading, and divide the pilot's attention.

X Task B 2

Start the set up of the Maueuver by chosing a ground refrence that is 90 degrees to the

wind

Position aircraft about a mile upwind of the reference, slow the aircraft to the desired speed, and complete your prelanding checklist.

X Task B 3

Clearing turns to clear the area and

Descend to the desired altitude, preferably from 600 to 1,000 feet agl.

X Task B 4

Head downwind straight for the reference line and cross it at a 90-degree angle.

As aircraft crosses the line, pick a point along the road to use as a reference for the first 180-degree turn, and roll into maximum bank of 30 to 40 degrees. (Never exceed a 45-degree bank during the maneuver.)

Watch the reference point & slowly roll out the bank to maintain a constant radius from the reference point.

X Task B 5

Crosscheck A/S, altitude, bank angle, and occasionally monitor engine instruments.

Keep an eye out for traffic and note potential emergency landing sites

X Task B 6

Complete the first 180-degree upwind portion of the maneuver should have the minimum bank angle, and should cross the reference line at a 90-degree angle.

Before rolling level to cross the reference line, be sure to check again for traffic in the direction in which you'll be turning.

X Task B 7

Roll wings level momentarily as crossing the reference line, pick the next reference point, and then roll into the next turn.

Keep those crosschecks going as you increase the bank slowly to maintain the constant radius from the reference point. Should reach maximum bank (30 to 40 degrees) just before crossing the reference line the second time.

X Task B 8

Roll level as when crossing the line, pick the next point, then roll in the maximum bank in the opposite direction.

X Task B 9 Make sure

Pick suitable altitude (between 600' & 1000' AGL) 1000' AGL is suggested

Pick a good point (make sure you pick a place with a good emergency landing spot)

Configure Airspeed prior to entry (C-172 90 MPH)

X Task B 10 PTS Common Errors

Faulty entry procedure

Poor planning, orientation or division of attention

Uncoordinated use of flight controls

Improper correction for the wind drift

An unsymmetrical ground track

Failure to maintain selected altitude or airspeed

Selection of a ground reference point where there is no suitable emergency landing area within gliding distance
