*President Wilson believed the US should remain neutral during WWI
*Business people in the US wanted to trade with all countries in the war *In 1915 Germany began to sink American merchant ships without rescuing survivors. *Great Britain made US merchant ships turn around and go home *Passenger ship Lusitania was sunk by Germans which killed almost 1200 people *Germans promised not to sink any more innocent ships *In 1917 Germans restart sinking merchant ships which will cause the US to break off all relations with Germany. *Once the Zimmerman note was intercepted the US knew they had to declare ware against Germany which they did on April 6, 1917 |
