The Altimatum
Austrians supported by Germany send Serbia one. They have 48 Hours to decide. They agree to all but two. Russia mobilizes her tropps to support Serbia. Germany demands that Russia stop thier troops (6-7 million men) but Russia says no. Germany declares war on Russia. July 28, 1914.
Why did Britian get involved?
Britain had Ententes with France and Russia. Only friendly agreements but French and Russians given an impression that Britain would fight. The Schlieffen Plan.

Germany was competing with the UK to build battleships. The British feared an attack on thier Empire. Germany was competing with Russia and France to expand their armies.

By 1914 all the major powers were linked by a system of alliances. The alliances made it more likely that a war would start. Once stated the alliances made if more likely to spread.
Nationalisim
This was an age when all nations wanted to assert thier power and independance. In Europe, Slavs, aided by Serbia and Russia, wanted to be free of Austrian rule.

Why did Germany also declare war on France?
because they stood in thier way for war. Germany thought that if they could clear out France first, then they could devote all of thier time to war with Russia.
