How does the climate of Central Otago differ from the rest of the grape growing areas of New Zealand?

Most of viticultural New Zealand has a cool to moderate maritime climate. In Central Otago the vineyards are situated inland and in the foothills of the Southern Alps where the climate is moderate to cool continental.
