Describe the wines of the Rheinterasse.
Aromas of peach, citrus, and a distinctive smoked meat pungency characterize wines grown on the red soils of the Rheinterrasse.
Apart from Permian red shales what other soils are found here?
Loess, sand, and calcareous soils in each of these villages can also yield distinctive wines from the traditional varieties Riesling and Silvaner.
Are grosslages important here?
Over half of the region's wine is sold as brands or under the name of a Grosslage, most notorious of which is Niersteiner Gutes Domtal (a designation virtually guaranteeing that the wine does not originate in Nierstein vineyards).

Muller Thurgau most planted with Sylvnar and Riesling 10% each. Red varieties account for one third.
