En Primeur Sales
Small quantities of stock released the March after harvest by top chateau to free up cash tied up in stock. Released in tranches. Wines are kept at chateau and released to buyer aprox. 2 years after harvest.
Influence on Price
-Quantity more than quality for inexpensive Bordeaux.
-Branded Bordeaux AC wines demand specific quality so prices are slightly higher.
-Vintages influence price.
-Reviews and marks influence price.
Generic Appelations
-Largest appellation is Bordeaux AC.
-Medium bodied reds, blackberry and cedar flavors, sometimes astringent tannins and unripe flavors.
-Light, plain white wines with some herbaceouness if Sauvignon Blanc is in blend.
-Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc becoming more common.
-Bordeaux AC also covers some excelent wines that fall outside of regional AC classification (i.e. Pavillon Blanc from Margaux and dry whites from Sauternes).

-Saint-Emillon Premier Grand Cru Classe and Saint-Emillon Grand Cru AC wines are grown on gravel and limestone soils.
-Low yields.
-Aged in new oak.
-Rich tannins, red berry fruit developing to tobacco and cedar with age.
-Premium prices.
-Sandy soils below limestone produce lighter styles of wine.
