Southern France

- region lie on mediteranien coast from Italy on east to Spanish border on west, between see and mountains Alps, Central and Pyrinees.
- Split into three gorups: Provence (пррованс), Languedoc (лонгедоок) and Roussillon (ррусио)
- moving the quality from poor Vin de Table through Vin de Pays (PGI=IGP) to AC wines.
- largest vineyard area
Climate and Topography
- Mediteranean climate, warm summers, long sunshine ours, mild winters and low rainfal levels especially during the growing season.
- Different soils
- Strong winds have impact to vineyards
Black Grape Varieties
- 75% accounts of production in southern France
- Grenache is most widely planted
- Next two most widely plantet is Syrah and Carignan (гаррињо)
- those ACs wihich permited smaller precetage of Carignan have more prestigious wines.
- Also but smaller sites are planting with Melot, Cabarnet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Mourvedre.
White Grape Varieties
- Cahardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc is widely planted
used for production of IGP (PGI) wines.
- Viognier has sagnificant increase
- Muscat is used to produce Vins Doux Naturels
- Grenache Blanc is used for dry wines
- There is smal pocket of Mauzac in Limoux, Picpoul in Pinet, Maccabeu in Roussillon, Role in Provance and Clairette in Languedoc and Provance.
Viticulture and Vinification
- Drought and Winds is a problem in this region,
- Goblet and increasing VSP vine training
- implementing more new techonlogy, low yields, oxygen and temp. contoled, carbonic maceration is wide spread and help to softeness tannins of Carignan
Languedoc-Roussillon
- three departments of Languedoc is Aude, Harault and Gard
- Pyrenees-Orientales department are known as Roussillon
- AC structure has grown rapidly, which restricted using international grape varieties but producers sidestepped this rule and producing varietally labeled IGP (PGI) wines
Appellation Wines
*Languedoc AC - cover all AC vineyards from Pyrenees-Orientales to Gard, above this are a number of appellations such as Cotes du Roussillon AC or Minervois AC
- Sub-regions of Languedoc AC can add their names on label alongside Languedoc AC
- from 2011 some AC and sub-regions can use Grand Vins du Languedoc and the best is permitet to use Grads Crus du Languedoc.
- Vast majority of ACs is red wines and are based of grape guartet: Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre
- Huge diversity of soils, climate, terroar ACs
- Notably different AC is Limoux where some premium cool climate oaked Chardonnay blends are made.
IGP Wines
- International varieties as Merlot, Cabarnet Sauvignon, Chardonay and Sauvignon Blanc are sale as Vin de Pays
- Some good quality, inexpencive, varietaly labeled wines with ripe but simple character (modeled on the New World style) is important to commercial survival of viticulture in south of France, And most are sold under regional name of Pay D'Oc
- 60% of total IGP (PGI) French wine production.
