How do you write the equation of a line when given the slope and the y-intercept?

ex: What is the equation of a line that has a slope of 2 and a y-intercept of -6?
1) Label your information for slope (m) and y-intercept (b). (m = 2 and b = -6)
2) Plug into the formula y = mx + b (y = 2x - 6)

example answer: y = 2x - 6
How do you write the equation of a line when given a point on the line and the slope?

ex. What is the equation of a line that passes through the point (-2, 5) and has a slope of -3?
1) Label your information for the point (x1, y1) and the slope (m) ; write the formula: y - y1 = m(x - x1)
2) Plug in your information into the formula
3) Either leave in point-slope form or solve for y (to leave in slope-intercept form)

Example answer: x1 = -2 y1 = 5 m = -3
y - 5 = -3(x - -2)
y - 5 = -3(x + 2)
y - 5 = -3x - 6
y = -3x - 1
How do you write the equation of a line when given two points on the line?

ex. What is the equation of a line that passes through the points (2, -5) and (6, 7)?
1) Find the slope using y2-y1/x2-x1
2) Pick one point, label it, and label slope.
3) Use the point-slope formula and Plug in your information
4) Either leave in point-slope form or solve for y

Example Answer: (2, -5) and (6, 7)
7 - -5 / 6 - 4
12/2
m = 6

I select point (2, -5) and use m = 6
y - y1 = m(x - x1)
y - -5 = 6(x - 2)
y + 5 = 6x - 12
y = 6x - 17
How do you write the equation of a line from a graph?
1) Determine the y-intercept (b)
2) Using two points, find the slope using the formula rise over run (rise/run).
3) Plug b and m into the formula y = mx + b
