The Treaty Of Versailles

War Guilt Clause: Germany alone was responsible for the war.

Reparations: Germany had to pay 6.6 million the the allies to cover the cost of war damage

Reduction Of Armed Forces: Germany was only allowed an army of 100,000 men. They could not have submarines or an Air Force.

• Loss Of Territory: Germany lost land to the east and west.

• Austria: The union of Germany and Austria (Anschluss) was banned.

Demilitarisation Of The Rhineland: Germany was not allowed have troops near the French boarder for France’s protection.

Set Up The League Of Nations: To deal with future disputes peacefully the treaty was designed by the BIG THREE.

Impact Of The Treaty Of Versailles:

• Germany resented the harsh terms of the treaty. Hitlers promise in the 1930’s to abolish the treaty resulted in his rise to power.

• Since Wilson believed in self-determination, many smaller countries were created.

Italy did not get the land it was promised when it changed sides. Many Italians felt bitter about this. This aided the rise of Mussolini to power.
