Brahma: - Creator of the Universe


- Usually Dressed in white riding a swan/peacock


- Shown with 4 faces looking to four compass points (All knowing)


Vishnu: - The Preserver, often descends into the world in human form


- Often pictured with his partner Lakshimi, riding on the back of a halfman/halfbird creature


- Dressed in Yellow with blue skin


Shiva: - Destroyer and Redeemer


- Often shown wearing a tiger skin loin cloth and a snake collar


- Deity of cosmic dance

Why is the Ganges river considered sacred to Hindu's?

In Hinduism, the river Ganga is considered sacred and is personified as a goddess Gaṅgā. It is worshipped by Hindus who believe that bathing in the river causes the remission of sins and facilitates Moksha

Why are cows sacred to Hindu's?

- Lord Krishna was a cowherd and the bull is depicted as the vehicle of Lord Shiva. Today the cow has almost become a symbol of Hinduism


- In India the cow is believed to be a symbol of earth because it gives so much yet asks nothing in return


-Bhisma also observes that the cow acts as a surrogate mother by providing milk to human beings for the whole life

Four Stages of Life

1. Student 7 to 20 -Religious education + willingness to search for truth


2. Householder 20 to 50 - Duty to family, raising children, earning a living


3. Semi-Related When Family is self supporting -Retreat from worldly life + focus on spiritual matters


4. Wandering Astetic When ready - Holy deattached life, no possessions or responsibilities



Gandhi's Fundamental Truth of Fellowship

So we can only pray, if we are Hindus, not that a Christian should become a Hindu, or if we are Mussalmans, not that a Hindu or a Christian should become a Mussalman, nor should we even secretly pray that anyone should be converted, but our inmost prayer should be that a Hindu should be a better Hindu, a Muslim a better Muslim and a Christian a better Christian. That is the fundamental truth of fellowship

Untouchables - Do dirtiest work in society and lived separately


- Considered outsiders not to interact with any of the four caste

- One of the main goals is to understand that Atman and Brahman are one


- Best way to train one's mind: meditation

The Path of Devotion

In this path Hindus choose a particular Deity


- They spend their life worshipping that deity


- Can more than one be worshiped? Yes although most are tied to one

Known as: Karma Yoga


Involves Hindu's doing thier dharma to the best of abillity


Hindu's should not act hoping they will be rewarded with good karma


Stresses discipline, ritual action, moral choices
