Caesar Augustus

• Was part of Jesus' early life.


• Ordered a census of the Roman empire at the time of Jesus' birth which forced people to return to their hometowns that they were born in, in order to be recorded in towns which they were born

• Was a part of Jesus' arrest


• Thought Jesus was dangerous bc he criticized the Pharisees ( a strictly jewish sect that followed strict diets and ritual purity) - the Sanhedrin was jew so he felt threatened. Also he thought the Roman masters would accuse the council of not maintaining a strict social order

• 1 God (all good) responsible for all creations & universe - supreme being, personal God, approachable by prayer, merciful & forgiving, loved humanity, gives us freedom... Same God of the Jews. The whole universe is God's creation

• Templative meditation- spiritual & involved additional practices such as fasting, meditation, etc. It brings you closer to God and this is individual work. Similar bc they're both ways in which you may communicate with God, praise him, and worship him

The meaning of: The cross
Reminds xtians of Christ and his sacrifice of himself to have forgiven their sins and what he went through for them as well as his salvation and his crucifixion. It symbolizes Xtians belief that God loved the people so much that he offered his so for the sake of humanity, for their salvation.

a spiritual benefit, grace, or favour from God that rep high points in a persons religious life. Theses are bestowed upon Christians when they reach a certain stage in their life which are identified as a new beginning ie Birth- Baptism
Original Sin
The Story of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. God Commanded them not to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil but they disobeyed him therefore leaving a spot of this deed on the soul of their descendants. Baptism removes this by allowing you to enter Jesus' salvation
Transubstantiation
refers to the belief that the bread and wine undergoes a change in substance (not physically, or chemically). The bread is Jesus' body and the wine is his blood being shared with the congregation. This refers to the last supper when Jesus offered this to his disciples. (the Eucharist)
2 rites of passages which are sacraments in most Christian Churches
• Baptism and Communion because Baptism frees you of original sin and communion is Jesus offering us his salvation which are 2 of the main Xtian beliefs. You're bare witnessing in front of a congregation that you are accepting Jesus' sacrifice, and in Baptism you're entering Xtianity.
The meaning of the word beatitude? Which of the beatitudes in the verses above do you think is the most important today?

• Beatitudes are qualities needed to gain eternal life in heaven stated in a sermon by Jesus.


• The beatitudes which are the most important in my opinion are "blessed are the pure in heart..." and "...hunger and thirst for righteousness" because if you master these you'll be accomplishing the others as well.

10 Commandments vs Beatitudes sim/diff

• The Beatitudes & 10 commandments are similar bc they're both sets of morals and values for Xtians to follow and motivate you to become a better person and live life in the way of God and to be like Jesus


• They're diff. Bc beatitudes are characteristics while the 10 commandments are more like laws/rules/principals to live by.

Diff b/w new and old testament:
Old test. Is the Judaic tradition of the law and the prophets, while the New test. Is the Xtian tradition of the apostles, and is exclusive to Xtianity.
2. The diff b/w the gospels & epistles & purpose of each type?

-Gospels- story of Jesus told my Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. Their purpose was to talk about his life and all the good he did so Xtians would strive to be like him, have Christ like love etc.


-Epistles- Letters written by the early Xtians, their purpose was to be used as sacred readings, during worship, and to encourage Xtians during times of persecution and to remind them of Jesus' command that they love one another just as they love God.

Similarities of the 3 synoptic gospels? How does Jesus' differ?
• 3 gospels sim. Bc same perspective, some test is shared, and some of the versus are word-for-word from another Johns differs because it's written from a diff. Perspective
How did Luther's ideas about salvation differ from those of the Roman Catholic Church?

• Believed that salvation was gained by faith alone • Stated that if someone sinned, they don't have to necessarily pray for forgiveness, but they could do a good act ie. Donate money to the poor. (indulgence)


• RCC believes that was justified by having faith AND doing good works , receiving the sacraments, and fulfilling a # of the church's requests.

Purgatory
the temporary stage in Roman Catholicism where the souls of those who've died = purified from sin

RC belief that the pope cant err when speaking on matters of faith and morals in his role as head of the Catholic church

When i see examples of prejudice and discrimination i feel disgusted know that there are still people in the world who are discriminating others because of the way they look, their religious/cultural background despite the fact that no is better than anyone else and were all equal in the eyes of god, i cant comprehend their ignorance and why they feel that its okay say such things and believe everything they see and hear w/o digesting it first or doing any research, using common sense, etc.
Short answer: Is judaism a culture, nationality, or religion?
• I believe that it is a combination of the 3. Judaism was stated up as a religion when god sent the 10 commandments through moses to the hebrews, he also had something for them called the "promised land", all these people originated from the same group of people thus they became one big cultural family, jews everywhere encourage each other to do the best they can and aim high to bring pride to the jewish ccommunity. Its a nationality bc all these people were granted what is seen as the promised land, isreal.
Short answer: Do you agree or reject that jesus was a rebel who changed the status quo of his time?
I reject that jesus was a rebel who changed the status quo of his time. He wasn't suppose to be a political figure or trying to causing social issues, instead, he was suppose to bring the message of god to the people and show them that god loved them and to teach them the proper way to live and save them from their unhappiness. He may have affected the status quo in a social aspect because he treated everyone equally and was kind to the poor but he wasn't a rebel.

• Theses are good advices for people in todays world because when you are merciful and forgive others when they have done something it's likely that when you make a mistake people will forgive you, its a good natured act which makes you like much easier. When you stand up for whats right your being independant and taking leadership and making a positive impact in the world, when you die from doing a virtuous act its like a one way ticket to heaven. When you have a pure heart and good intentions youre setting yourself up for success and victory
