Missi Dominici
- When Charlemagne divided his kingdom into regions he appointed officials to help him run the empire the officials were known as miss dominici which means the lords messengers. They traveled the empire to make sure that everyone was following the emperors will.
Feudalism
- After the death of Charlemagne most Europeans were governed by small local leaders known as lords.
- Needed to protect their land because there wasn’t a strong government to do it for them.
Fief
The land granted to a vassal was called a fief.
Vassal
Was the person who was granted land from the lord.
A vassal is usually a knight in the noble class.
Chivalry
Chivalry was a code of honor among knights. It said that they had to protect anyone weaker (women and children) It protected the noble class and made society less violent as a whole.
Primogeniture
It was a policy that land and money was inherited by the eldest son from his father.
Excommunicate
To be excommunicated by the church means that the person would not be a member of the church, receive sacraments or be buried on sacred grounds.
Regular Clergy
It was a group made up of Monks and they lived according to strict rules. They remove themselves from the outside world to avoid temptation and be closer to G-d.
