is a broad concept that refers to all aspects - political, economic, social - of the urban way of life

- this is the end result of urbanization
- suggests urban life is way different than rural life

- Process involving two phases
1. movement of people from rural to urban places, engage in primarily nonrural occupations
2. change in lifestyle that results from leaving countryside

with regards to the movement the place doesn't become urban until its workforce is divorced from soil, trade, manufacturing and service provision dominate economies, (pop. density and economic function effects)

with regard to the change in lifestyle, when the population grows there are smaller family sizes because the value of children change (social, psychological and behavior effects)
Urban place
when population goes up the place gets bigger (to show they aren't dependent on agriculture)
City
is a political designation referring to a large, density populated place that is legally incorporated as a municipality

1. Megacity - 10 million +
2. Any settlement may call itself a city (big or small)
Urbanized area
is a built up area where buildings, roads, and essentially urban land sues predominate, even beyond the political boundaries of cities and towns

1. areas of urban/rural boundaries are blurred
Conurbation
is when urbanized areas merge (ex. Dallas-Fort Worth)
World Cities
function as command/control centers of the world economy (ex. NY, Tokyo, London)
Metropolis & Metropolitan Area
is a " mother city " in old terms, today any city can be a metropolis, Metropolitan area is anchored by a large city (in the U.S. 50,000+ pop., urban and rural areas must be integrated and its built from county units)
Megalopolis
is an urban combination of metropolitan areas at regional scale, together because of transportation
Site & Situation
Site is the physical characteristics of a place where the city originated/evolved (ex. NY Harbor)

Situation is the relative location of the city (how it connects with other places)
Urban Landscapes
are manifestations of thoughts, deeds & actions of humans
Capital City
are the headquarters of government function ("Head cities"
Preindustrial City/(Traditional City)
were founded/grew before industrialization in the 19th/20th centuries
Industrial City
has an economy based on the production of manufactured goods
Post Industrial City
has an economy based on the service industry (today's world)
Primate City
is a city that is large, economically dominant and culturally expressive of a national identity, ( it is at least twice the size of the 2nd largest city, ex. Paris)
Rank-size Rule
states that the population of a city within a country should equal the population of the largest city divided by its rank (5th largest city should be 1/5 population of largest city)
Colonial City
Two types of colonial cities:
1. European city created where no urban life was before
2. European city grafted on existing indigenous urban place
Socialist City
Cities that were created and are run like they are under the rules of the Communist party

They have massive government involvement in their economies, no private landownership and no free market
New Town
is a planned urban community built from society with the intent of becoming as self-contained as possible
