The present perfect (I have been) vs. The past simple (I was)

When are these two tenses used?

Past Simple is used just to state facts or things that happened, and is used with specific times:
Ex. One hour ago, last week, March 14th, at two o'clock, When we were on vacation, Monday night, this morning, etc.

Present perfect is used just to emphasize the fact that something has or has not been done/completed. It is used with unspecific time: Ex. Just, already, before, not...yet, in a while, etc.

It is also used to talk about things that have started in the past and are still continuing. This does NOT mean that these actions are finished.
-You have been the owner of your own business for a number of years.
-I have worked as a language teacher for 5 years.

In the US/CAN, we have the tendency to use the present perfect continuous for this:
-I have been working as a language teacher for 5 years.

The present simple (I eat) vs. The present continuous (I am eating)

When are these two tenses used?

Present simple is used for:
-Things that happen regularly (I go work at 8 AM everyday).
-General statements (The sky is blue. You own your own business).

-Emotions/feelings/opinions/the senses (I don't believe that.; This cake is delicious).

The present continuous is used for:
-Things happening right now, this very moment (Ex. I am typing your cards into the system.)
-For planned actions in the near future (I am eating dinner with my family tonight).

-To add a layer of frustration/irritation on top of something (Ex. Neutral: John always comes to work late. Irritated: John is always coming to work late.)
-Things that are happening in your life for a period of time (for a few days, weeks, months, etc.) that will eventually end. (Example: I am studying medicine, and will graduate in 2016.; I am looking for a new apartment. I hope to buy it in the next few weeks.)
