What is the purpose of the Word Identification Strategy?
To help pronounce unknown words.
To what kind of reading materials might you apply to this strategy?
Textbooks, magazines, newspapers, owner manuals, purchase agreement, mail, banking documents
In a nutshell, what are you doing as you use the Word Identification Strategy?
Breaking the word into small parts.
Why is breaking the words into small parts helpful?
Each part is short and easy to pronounce, Once you can pronounce the parts, you can put them all together to say the whole word.
Why do you need to use the Word Identification Strategy when you don't know a word instead of reading to the end of the passage?
Because you need to understand each sentence before you read the next one.
What does "Discover the context" mean?
It means that you try to say some of the sounds in the word. Then you read the rest of the sentence to learn about the meaning within the word needs to fit..
What does "Isolate the beginning" mean?
It means that you look at the beginning of the word for a group of letters you can pronounce, then use a backwards "L" to isolate it from the rest of the word.
What does "Separate the suffix" mean?
It means that you look at the ending of the word for a group of letters you can pronounce, then use a frontwards "L" to separate it from the rest of the word.
What does "Examine the stem" mean?
It means you divide what's left of the word into parts after you isolate the beginning and separate the ending.
Why do we have the "Rules of Twos and Threes"?
They help us decide how to divide up the stem into parts.
Who should you ask for help?
Someone who is a good reader.
When should you ask someone for help?
After you have tried the first five steps of the strategy and still can't pronounce the word.
What are two ways the dictionary can help you?
You can see how the word is pronounced and the meaning of the word.
How do you use the Word Identification Strategy when you are reading?
First, I start reading. When I come to a word I don't know, I try to say some of the sounds and read the whole sentence to see if I can guess the word. If that doesn't help me, I look at the beginning of the word to see if there is a pre fix or a beginning part that I can say. Then I look at the word to see if there's a suffix or ending part that I can say. Then I try to say the stem. If I can't, I break the stem of the word down into small parts using the Rules of Twos and Threes. I try to say all the parts together.
When do you ask someone for help or look in the dictionary?
If I can't make sense of the word after using the Word ID steps 1-5.
