Dome of the rock, Jeruselum. 691. 2nd oldest mosque in world. Muslims worship it because it is 3rd holiest site in all of Islam. Built over large rock where it is believe mohammad ascended to heaven on a winged horse. In jeruselum under Israeli control, Jews control it. Muslims hate that. On top of ruins of a Jewish temple. Actual gold dome, every decade or so this wears off and is replaced. 60 foot high ceiling. EVerything is cool colored. White marble/ stone are smoothe texture. Dynamic on dome and arches but everything else is stable. Only geometric patterns, no animals or people allowed to be depicted in muslim art it is considered not holy.

Norman invasion of England by William the conquerer. They are descendts of vikings (we can see this on boat). This is the last time british isles were ever successfully invaded. King harold was king at the time and he is now known as (harold the unready) because he never believed william the conquerer would invade. This is why we now speak english. Warm brown color, except for green. Full of rythm, of the soldiers.

Arch of Constantine, Rome, 315. Roman triumph arch dedicated to commemorate a roman military victory constantine won. Monument to religious tolerence. After victory he allow rivals to go home in peace because he became christian. First christian roman emperor. He had a vision of a firey burning cross that he thought was sign from god to become christian.

Sarcophagus of Junius Bassus, Rome, 359 AD. In late roman empire skill of sculptures greatly diminished we can see in this piece. Stories from christian bible depicted here. This is sarcohphogus of upper noble class citizen who converted to christianity. He was born before constantine so he was pagan at some point. Pink warm stone.

Hagia Sophia, Anthemius and Isidorus. 537AD. Cathedral of Byzanite religion. Justinian built this. Greek orthodox now. Byzanite features that floor is shaped like cross. Series of Abces. Semi circulor extension on outter wall which helps support weight. Strongest system ever built for supporting a dome. 180 foot tall dome. Tallest ever built in ancient world. Arabic shields are because this was converted to mosque when Turkey took over. Collumns are taken from ruins of roman temples by Justiiainian. Whole building was built in just five years.

Salisbury Cathedral, England, 1330. Oldest working clock in the world, still working after 700 years. Knave is 110 feet. One of the few churches that has a double transept. 1st airplane warning light (because it is foggy) put there in the 1920s. Hand made stone, original hand wall over 800 years old, wall still intact. Tallest church tower in all Great britian at 405 feet tall. Rythm in the windows/ butresses. real smoothe glass texture/ real stone. Completely balanced symmetrical. Largest mass is towers than knave than transepts. Yellow warm colored stone.
