to stop spread of com. USA believed that com stopped people to have freedom and democracy (WW2 fought to protect)
Fear of Communist expansion in Asia
Containment and Truman Doctrine. Chinese com revolution 1949 scared the USA that com could spread in Asia. Theyd accepted East Europe had fallen but wanted to stop the spread in Asia. Allies (Japan) considered important and loss of China had been felt.
Political Pressure In The USA
Turman had to appear tough in face of com so felt obliged to ensure US used containment. The china lobby put pressure on Truman to take a tougher stance towards com.
Economic Factor
US wanted to trade with nations in south east asia so the loss of china was huge. The US had gained Japan as ally after WW2 and concered about the impact the spread of com would have on her.
Imperial Decline
Old European Empires who controlled Asia couldn't afford to hold power. The old colonial empire (Japan in Korea, France in Vietnam) couldn't control them.
