Why are the ions of transition metals in solution often coloured?
They absorb specific parts of the visible spectrum
They transmit the complementary frequencies to the specific parts of the visible spectrum absorbed. |

What is colorimetry?
An experimental technique used to find the concentration of a coloured solution.
The amount of light absorbed by a solution-it's absorbance- is proportional to the concentration of the solution |
Describe and explain the experimental technique of colorimetry
1. Choose suitable filter/ set wavelength
2. Make up standard solutions of the coloured solution 3. Zero colorimeter with tube of water/ solvent 4. Measure absorbance of standard solutions 5. Plot calibration curve 6. Measure absorbance of unknown 7. Read off concentration from calibration curve |
