Hero- what is a hero? “A hero is a person, typically a man, who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” Nici Caro (the director) didn’t believe this stereotype and wanted to create a hero of her own, a female hero, not with superpowers or an exaggerated fan club but just a genuine, fun loving girl with real personal power.
1
Paikea, the main character in which this story encapsulates, many qualities that make her worthy of this title. Paikea displays great tenacity throughout the film. Beginning from her darkened birth, Paikea was shunned upon by her grandfather KORO. Paikea stating without ambiguity… “There was no gladness when I was born. My twin brother died and took my mother with him. Everybody was waiting for the first born boy to lead us but he died and I didn’t.” This emotional distaste marinating throughout the story until the conclusion when KORO lends his respect to Paikea as the next leader and not just a mistake.
2
Paikea is determined and courageous countless times throughout the film. The first time the audience witnesses these qualities is at the concert, where there were many distractions and much disrespect targeted towards Paikea. Fight or flight? Paikea instead choosing to keep singing on stage and in spirit.
3
These attributes are also shown when KORO refuses to let Paikea participate at the ‘chief school’ based on her gender. To combat this decision, Paikea pursues her desire and seeks out her uncle and ali RAWIRI to teach her the TAIAHA. An ancient fighting implement reserved for Chiefs.
4
Paikea also represents a unique leadership uncommon for her age bracket. Other peers observed in the film are obsessed with the addictive fast paced modern and urban lifestyle. They are focused on their reflection, cars, gangs and the fragile party scene. In contrast, Paikea is mentally and emotionally geared differently, being more concerned with finding answers to situations in the traditional ways, very much like her grandfather. To compliment this attitude, Paikea chooses to participate in a healthy lifestyle, this sampled by riding her bike to school and also keenly promoting this view to her grandmother and her friends.
5
It is without a doubt, that Paikea does not posses any sensationalized superhero powers. She cannot leap between tall buildings and she doesn’t get changed in a telephone booth. She doesn’t wear a lycra costume or hide behind a distorted mask. Paikea, through no fault of her own born a female and is not invincible. But Paikea is extra-ordinary. Paikea is just a real person, just a normal girl but possesses extraordinary qualities including tenacity, determination, courage and leadership. This is what real super heroes are made of.
