What was the Weimar Republic?

February 1919 (after WWI) a new democratic government was declared. The Weimar Republic was a genuine attempt to create a perfect democratic country.

Describe the conditions of Germany post War

10% population dead. Divided into 4 military occupation zones by allies not to regain independence til 1949. Soviets took 23% of Germany's GNP reparations.

What wer the three politcal groups in Germany after WW1 and who were the supporters?

Wanted equal communist society


Supported by poor working class.

Wanted democracy


Supported Weimar


Liberals and middle class wanted a say in Germany unlike the Kaiser.




Right wing-


Hated communism, democracy & Jews.


Wanted strong government to make Germany superior.


Supporters of the Kaiser & ex-soilders formed the Freikorps and attacked oppositions.

What and when was the Kapp Putch?

MArch 1920. Ebert wanted the Freikorps to disband. Instead, gerneral Luttwitz and Wolfgang Kapp joined with 12,000 Freikorps and marched on Berlin.

What were the causes and effets of hyperinflation in Germany after WWI?

Government owed money so decided to print more bank notes after missing a reperations payment in 1923. Short term, this worked. The money in circulation made everyone wealthy so shops raised prices. It was so rapid that it became hyperinflation. Workers did not benefit.

What and when was the Munich Putsch?

1923. Hitler, Kahr and Lossow plotted against weimar during crisis. October 4th, Kahr and Lossow called off the rebellion- angering Hitler. November 8th, Hitler threatened them and let them go free after they agreed to rebel. 9th November, Hitler went to rebell but Kahr called the police. 16 died and Hitler was arrested.

What were the 2 main flaws of Weimar?

-Proportional representation caused dozens of tiny parties - none were able, therefore, to get a majority vote, thus no laws passed.

What was article 48?

In an emergency, the president could issue decrees without the Reichstag's permission. But emergencies where not defined. Hitler used this to take power legally.
