23 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
the muscle that is shortening to perform a concentric contraction
agonistic
a grip in which the thumb is wrapped around the bar so that the bar is fully held in the palm of the hand (like during bench press)
closed grip
two different exercises for the same primary muscle group that are completed in succession without an intervening rest period
compound set
action that occurs when a muscle overcomes a load and shortens (think downward pull of a lat pull down, or the upward push of the bench press)
concentric contraction
NOT AB EXERCISES. Exercises that involve movement at two or more primary joints and recruit one or more large muscle group areas
core exercises
that occurs when a muscle lengthens as it contracts (think controlled downward motion of a bench press, or controlled downward motion of a bicep curl)
eccentric contraction
the specific sequence of exercises within a resistance training workout
exercise arrangement
number of workouts preformed in a given time period (typically one week)
frequency
type of warm up that involves performing basic activities requiring movement of the major muscle groups (i.e. jogging, cycling, jumping rope…)
general warm up
the distance between the hands when placed on a bar
grip width
an increase in cross-sectional area of the muscle fiber (bigger muscles)
hypertrophy
action that occurs when a muscle generates force against resistance but does not overcome it, so that NO movement takes place (think planks)
isometric contraction
an exercise that involves movement at two or more primary joints (think power cleans, lunges, squats, dead lifts, shoulder press, lat pull down etc.)
multijoint exercise
lying face-down (like during hamstring curls)
prone
the number of times a movement of an exercise is completed
repetitions
the group of repetitions that are performed consecutively
set
An exercise that involves movement at only one primary joint.
single joint exercises
Between 3 and 7 days a week
cardio
daily
trunk/stretching
Between 3 and 5 days a week allowing for a day of rest in between resistance training of the same muscle group
resistance
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
1 Corinthians 9:24-27
4Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
Romans 12:4-8
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will
Romans 12:1-3
