Why was Russia so difficult to govern?

- vast empire. West to East = 4000mi, North to South = 2000ni


- communications tricky because of size


- railways were nice but there weren't many


- Russian empire covered 1/6 of the world


- little of the land could be used for farming

What was life like in Russia 1900?

- 4/5 of every person was a peasant


- starvation and disease as a result of bad harvest: 400, 000 people died in 1891


- backward way of strip farming, 20/30 narrow strips


- few animals, many wooden ploughs

Who were the Nobility?

made up of just 1% of the population, they owned almost 1/4 of all the land. Extremely rich

Who were the middle classes?

Life was good for the middle classes, they had theatre entertainment and ballets to go to. Ate well and drank well. Composed of educated people such as doctors/lawyers

Who were the workers?

They lived in cheap wooden housing often adjacent to the factories they worked in. Dormitories of up to 50 workers were in constant 24 hour use in rotation. Many were young male peasants forced off the land.

How was Russia governed in the 1900s?

Nicholas II of the Romanov dynasty



autocrat, divine right to rule. Council of ministers to assist in the ruling of his country.


Getting things done was really slow, people at the bottom had low wages so weren't motivated.

What Part did the Orthodox Church play?

The Orthodox church was very closely linked to the Tsar and supported his way of ruling



It taught that the Tsar was the head of the country, head of church, ie God's chosen representative on Earth.


This was why many peasants and workers thought of the Tsar as the "little father"

Was the Tsar fit to Rule Russia?

Although he was kind to his family, Nicholas II was prone to outbursts of cruelty and violence, wouldn't stand for opposition.



Anti Jewish, and thought democracy would lead to the collapse of Russia. Genuinely wanted to bring happiness upon his people.

What about the Tsar's wife?

Tsarina Alexandra was of German descent.


She was strong willed and obstinate



Very religious



Had a great influence on the Tsar.
