Composite Volcano

Shield Volcano
|
A wide and low volcano made from runny lava, eg. Mauna Loa, Hawaii

Supervolcano
|
A very large volcano, that explodes with a thousand times more power than a normal volcano. Eg. Yellowstone, USA

Tectonic Plates
|
There are several major plates and twelve smaller ones. These make up the Earths crust. Oceanic Plates are made of basalt and are between 5km and 10km thick. Continental Plates are made of granite and are between 25km and 90km thick. |

Destructive Plate Margin
|
Oceanic and Continental plates push together. Denser Oceanic is forced into the mantle, creating a subduction zone. Continental is compressed to form fold mountains and composite volcanoes. Major earthquakes occur when plates move. |

Constructive Plate Margin
|
Oceanic or Continental plates pull apart. Lava erupts forming shield volcanoes. Undersea Volcanoes form mid-ocean ridges. Minor earthquakes occur when plates move. |

Conservative Plate Margin
|
Plates are push past each other in different directions or speeds. Plates remain locked until the rock breaks along the fault line, this causes a major earthquake to occur. No Volcanoes.
