What is Montserrat?

Small island in the Carribean Sea.

Soufriere Hills

What are the causes of the eruption?

Destructive plate margin, where Atlantic plate is forced under the Caribbean plate. Magma rose up through weak points forming underground pool of magma. Rock above the pool collapsed, opening a vent and causing the eruption.

When was the eruption?

June 25th (small eruptions started in July 1995)

How many people died and how many were injured?

19 people died and 7 were injured

Give two primary impacts of the eruption.

Schools, hospitals, port and airport were destroyed. Vegetation and farmland were destroyed.

Give two secondary impacts of the eruption.

Volcanic ash has improved soil fertility. Tourism is now increasing on the island as people come to see the volcano.

Give two immediate responses to the eruption.

People were evacuated from the south to safe areas in the north. Shelters were built to house evacuees.

Give two long term responses of the eruption.

Risk map was created and an exclusion zone is in place. The south of the island is off limits while the volcano is still active. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory has been set up to try and predict future eruptions.
