New Jersey Plan

The plan was created in response to the Virginia plan, which called for two houses of congress .

It outlined the process for states to count slaves as part of the population in order to determine representation and taxation for the federal government.

Virginia plan

Delegates for a bicameral legislative branch. The plan was drafted by James Madison while he waited to assemble at the constitutional convention.

Constitutional Convention

A gathering for the purpose of writing a new constitution or revising an existing constitution. A general constitutional convention is called to create the first constitution of a political unit or entirely replace an existing constitution.

Great Compromise

An agreement that large and small states reached during the constitutional convention of 1787 that in part defined the legislative structure and representation that each state would have under the US.

Tyranny

Cruel and oppressive government or rule.

Anti-federalist

A movement that opposed the creation of a stronger US Federal government and which later opposed the ratification of the 1787 Constitution. They wanted a weaker central government. They wanted to add in a bill of rights.

Federalist

They wanted a strong government and strong executive branch. They did not want a bill of rights- they thought the new constitution was sufficient.

Popular Sovereignty

A government in which people rule.

Republicanism

The people exercise their power by voting for their political representatives.

Federalism

A system of government in which power is divided between a central government and smaller political units, such as states.

Separation of Powers

The division of basic government roles into branches.

Checks and balances

Each branch of government can exercise checks, or controls, over the other branches.

Limited Government

Restricting the power of government.

Individual Rights

Personal liberties and privileges.
