Why would it be useful for a viticulturist to know about the American members of the Vitus family?
The American members of the vitis family are the vines
that have been used to produce phylloxera resistant rootstock‐ knowing about them helps to understand rootstocks and rootstock choices. |
Identify the different parts of the grape vine.
Node
Internode Leaf Lateral Shoot Tendril Apex |
On Vitus Vinifera is there a bud at each node?
Yes.
What types of buds are at each node?
Prompt
Latent |
What is ecophysiology?
Ecophysiology is the vines interaction with its environment. Or more deeply it is the interaction between the plant (vine’s) physiological tendencies and the key ecological inputs -light, carbon assimilation, water balance, nitrogen fertility, and temperature.
Describe the importance and impact of carbon assimilation *
Carbon makes up most of the grapevine. It is gathered through
photosynthesis. Sugars are also key in fruit composition and in many carbon based compounds. Stored carbon is key in early season vine growth. |
Describe the importance and impact of Nitrogen
Key in vine vigor and building amino acids which go into building proteins
and enzymes. |
Describe the importance and impact of light
Photosynthesis
Phenol development Fertility |
Describe the importance and impact of Temperature
Phenol development
>50 deg needed for plant development |
Describe the importance and impact of water balance *
Reaction medium
Photosynthesis Dominant vascular fluid |
List measurable factors that can make vineyards different from one another.
Vineyard exposure
air flow wind humidity number of frost free days average precipitation temperature summary altitude |
What is important about the number of degree-days a vineyard gets?
number of frost‐free days or adequate temperatures for vine growth must be met
key in the selection of appropriate varieties - know what the annual average heat summary permits comparison between different years. |
What is vine balance?
Vigorous enough vegetative growth to grow the desired canopy size and shape,
balanced/even shoot growth across the vine, appropriate not excessive vine vigor, low lateral growth, not overly dense canopy, large enough crop to provide a sufficient carbon sink so as to limit vegetative growth but fosters fruit production that is of an appropriate composition for the winemaker’s goals |
In class we discussed how the presence and/or concentration of nearly all
compounds found in wine is the directly influenced by of one or more of the ecophysiologcal inputs discussed in question 8. For each of the following wine components please list one of the inputs involved |
