Railroads changed the appearance and economy of the Appalachian Plateau by allowing people to ship coal to distant places. Coal mining became a big business in that region.
How were some of the natural wonders created?
Some scientists think that long ago an ocean covered this area. When sea creatures died, their remains sank to the bottom. From their remains, limestone ws formed. Over the centuries, the ocean dried up and some of the limestone wore away, creating natural wonders like the Natural Chimneys, the Natural tunnel and Luray Caverns.
