what is the difference from DNA viruses and RNA viruses?
RNA need a viral encoded protein- replicase becase EUKS have no protein in existants to read RNA template
what ss of RNA is more like mRNA
(+)
what happens with (+)ss RNA?
can be transcribed to make a reverse transcriptase and then is read to make a dsDNA and then read by the host RNA polymerase
then what happens with (-) ssRNA viruses?
they have to bring a reverse transcriptase with them. this is given when the complementary ds RNA is expressed.
why do viruses have so many mutations?
viral proteins such as reverse transcriptase are error prone.
influenza is most severly caused by which type?
A, you get the flu
what are flu symtoms?
fever, muscle ache, headache, cough and chills?
if you have nausea and vomitting do you have a flu?
no
what is so weird about the 1918 epidemic?
so many people died and alot of young people died too
stucture wise describe the influenza virus?
envelop, has N and H
influenza-
hemagglutinin
attachement
influenza-
neuraminidase
aids in release from host
antigenic drift
mild, simple mutations
antigentic shift
major difference, happens when there is an error in viral packaging and get a mix of virulence factor genes
describe Influenza vaccine
based off of circulating H and N, attenuated
polio virus
naked virus
ss(+) RNA
fecal oral tranmission
what can polio infect and what antibodies are involved?
GI- IgA
Blood-IgG
CNS- none
endemic polio
result of poor sanitation, seen in kids, and is rarely paralytic because protected by mother's IgG
epidemic polio
in the presence of good sanitation, all ages are infected, paralytic prone
polio Sabin vaccine
oral
attenuated
IgG and IgA response
can mutate to be bad
herd immunity
polio Salk vaccine
injected
not alive
IgG response
