Make it clear that the animal is gone by using phrases like: "We've helped your friend to die" "The pet that died" "Your companion is gone" and let your client see their companions dead body.

It lets clients feel in control, Has client write down whether the animal had a good or a bad day so that they can see that it's time to euthanize.

An autopsy for animal, determines cause of death and is only done by request.
What happens when a pet is euthanized?
Their eyes don't close, their bodies stay warm for a while, bladder and bowels release, muscles twitch, and phantom breaths.
What is the first step of the euthanasia procedure?
A tranquilizer is given to relax the animal, while this is taking effect, talk to the owner about the rest of the procedure.
Where is the euthanasia injection given?
A vein in the front leg.
What is in the euthanasia IV?
It includes pental barbadol, which is a strong anethetic solution
Will animals feel any discomfort?
No, the only discomfort will be the needle prick and most don't even feel that.
How fast does the pental barbadol injection work?
Within seconds of administration.
What does pental barbadol do?
Stops the heart from beating and the brain from functioning
What should you do after the pet has died?
Check the heart and tell the client that their pet is dead and try to keep needles out of site.
If client is unsure that the pet is gone what should you do?
Offer to have the vet do a final exam so there is no question.

What should be done with the patients chart once the animal is diseased?
You should make sure no vaccination reminders are sent, and make sure to note what room was used and avoid using that room in the future for the same client
Should you tell children animals are being put to sleep?
No, tell them you are helping them to die or pass. Children should be involved in decisions of death. But tell children that you are helping them not be in pain.

What is a scavenger system used for?
To exhaust gaseous anesthetics outside the building.
What is passive scavenging?
When the animal exhales, it pushes gas down a tube which vents outside. This tube must angle downward because gas is heavier than air.
What is active scavenging?
Includes a small pump that pulls the gas outside the building. This is more efficient because the tubes can be ran in any direction.
What is a vaporizer?
Part of anesthetic machine that holds anesthetic solution.
When should a vaporizer be refilled?
At the end of the day in a well ventilated area.
What is collimating?
Closing down the diaphragm limiting size of the primary beam of the radiograph.
What are the two forms of radiation you can be exposed to?
Primary beam and scatter radiation.
What is primary beam radiation?
A very dangerous beam that runs from tube head to table.
What is scatter radiation?
X-rays that bounce off the animal or table rather than hitting radiographic film. Less dangerous, stand well away from it.

Monitoring badge that measures radiation and determines levels of radioactivity that a person is exposed to over time.
