To describe past subjunctive events.
-Used after expressions of influence, emotion and doubt.

-In the subordinate clause, to express a future action or state of being. (Main clause is present indicative or future)

What is the Imperfect used for?
1) To describe past, habitual actions:
Ex: Siempre nos quedábamos en aquel hotel. ("We always stayed (used to stay, would stay) at that hotel.

2) To describe a past action that was in progress:
Ex: Pedía la cena. ("She was ordering dinner")

3) To describe to past simultaneous past actions in progress, with "mientras"
Ex: Tú leías mientras Juan escribía la carta. ("You were reading while Juan was writing the letter")

4) To describe ongoing physical, mental, or emotional states in the past:
Ex: Estaban muy distraídos. ("They were very distracted")

5) To tell time in the past:
Ex: Era la una ("It was one o'clock")

6) To form a past progressive: an imperfect of estar + present participle:
Ex: Estábamos cenado a las diez. ("We were having dinner at ten")
