2 Patterns for Imperfect

yiqtol, yiqtal

(yiqt.o-l, yiqt.al)

dynamic, stative

Use of the Imperfect

"internal temporal structure of the situation"

1. usually expressing a future action

2. can refer to a custom, "used to.."

3. can be modal (may, should, would, could...)

4. after טֶרֶם (not yet, before) or עַד (until), render as past or present perfect

5. expresses the will (cohortative, jussive)

Cohortative, Jussive

1. cohortative: first person, often ending with ה ָ , "let us," "let me"

2. jussive: third person, "may he," "let them"

3. command: second person, "you shall"

Negation of Imperfect, Cohortative, Jussive

לֹא (just like the perfect)

- with second person indicates a general prohibition, "you shall not"

אַל is used to forbid a specific action, "Do not.."

Nominal sentence

- When only a subject and a predicate exist.

- We supply the verb.

- Translate tense based on context; without context can use present tense

The particle נָא

- "I pray", "please"

- Untranslated when no plea/entreaty is involved

- With a negative command, נָא comes right after the negative particle אַל.
