"Not a red rose or stain heart"

Suggests the gift giver is not giving a coventional gift and three is a dismissive tone of traditional poetry. The speaker thinks conventional gifts are cheesy, clichè and meaningless.

"I give you an onion"

Onion placed at the beginning of the stanza suggests the boldness of the gesture. The onion is an extended metaphor throughout the poem

"It is a moon wrapped in brown paper"

Literally refers to the colour of an onion beneath its skin. However, a moon is a traditional symbol of love and give an image of a romantic scene but the moon changes just like relationships do.

"Here"

The speaker is forcing the onion upon the recipient.

"It will blind you with tears like a lover"

Like an onion, love can bring tears to the eye due to the pain it causes. "Blind" links to the idea of being blinded by love but also highlighting connotations of being unable to see the reality and think rationally. We begin to move on from the joy that love brings but also can bring negatives

"Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips"

Suggests that love is difficult to forget just the the smell and pungent taste of an onion. It also implys a bitter side too.

"Possessive and faithful"

Reveals the strength of emotions and the bond that love has. It can be both positive and negative. There is a juxpostition that gives both positive and negative aspects

"Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding ring, if you like"

The small rings in the centre of an onion is being compared to a wedding ring. A good relationship will last and eventually lead to marriage. However, "shrink" suggests something decreasing in value perhaps suggesting that marriage will be bsf for your relationship. "If you like" : suggests that marriage is not essential.

"Its scent will cling to your fingers"

The emotional impact of a relationship will last a long time. Cling suggests relationships can be overbearing and suggests a sense of desperation
