What part of the lymph node enlarges when you have a viral infection?
The paracortex (houses the TCells as well as the high endothelial venules that allow T and B cells to enter from circulation)
What are the different parts of the lymph node medulla?
Cords = Plasma cells (& lymphocytes) packed closely

Sinuses = Macrophages (& reticular cells = fibroblasts/collagen III) filtering
What are the parts of the lymph node follicle?
Primary follicle = dormant/dense

Secondary follicle = active germinal centers (pale in the center)
What is the lymph drainage for the upper limb and lateral breast?
Axillary lymph node
What is the lymph drainage for the stomach?
Celiac LN
What is the lymph drainage for the duodenum?
Superior Mesenteric LN
What is the lymph drainage for the jejunum?
Superior Mesenteric LN
What is the lymph drainage for the sigmoid colon?
Colic → Inferior mesenteric LN
What is the lymph drainage for the Rectum (above the pectinate line)?
Internal iliac
What is the lymph drainage for the anal canal (below the pectinate line)?
Superficial inguinal
What is the lymph drainage for the testes?
The superficial and deep plexuses → Para-aortic LN
What is the lymph drainage for the scrotum?
Superficial inguinal

All "superficial" structures drain to superficial inguinal
What is the lymph drainage for the superficial thigh?
Superficial inguinal

All "superficial" structures drain to superficial inguinal
What area is special in that it drains to the popliteal LN?
The lateral side of the dorsum of the foot (over and out)
What are the major lymph ducts and what drains into them?
1) Right Lymphatic Duct (drains right half of head and right arm)

2) Thoracic duct = everything else!
Where does the thoracic duct drain?
At the junction of:
- L Subclavian vein
- L Internal jugular

dUct --> sUb jUg
What kind of fenestrations are found in the red pulp of spleen?
"Barrel hoop" basement membranes
Where are TCells found in the spleen? BCells?
Both are in the "White Pulp" surrounded by red pulp and w/ a central arteriole.
1) TCells:
- PALS = peri-arterial lymphatic sheath surrounding the central arteriole
- Throughout the white pulp
2) BCells = Follicles (germinal centers)
What vaccines should someone get if they don't have a spleen?
ABC's of Spleen Vaccines
1) PneumovAx (S. pneumoniae)
2) Flu shot (H. Influenza B)
3) MeningoCoCCal (N. meningitides)
What blood changes are you going to see in someone that's had a splenectomy?
Weird RBC's and High Platelets:
1) Howell-Jolly bodies (w/ nuclear remnants)
2) Target cells
3) Thrombocytosis
What cells are in the cortex of the thymus? The medulla?
Cortex = Immature T Cells (dense)
Medulla =
- Mature TCells (pale)
- Epithelial reticular cells (present their genome to incoming TCells; if recognize, are destroyed)
- Hassall's corpuscles (made by endothelial reticular cells)
What kind of selection occurs in the thymus and where?
@ the Cortico-Medullary junction:
- Positive - MHC restriction
- Negative - Nonreactive to self
From what branchial pouch does the thymus develop?
Third (THYrd) branchial pouch
