Coxey's Army (Union + Labor Militancy)

1893 - Jack Coxey proposed a protest because govt. spent over a billion on road project. Hijacked train. Fed govt. mobalized troops and intercepted the train.

Coeur d'Alene Mining War (Union + Labor Militancy)

Decade long war. Mining Co. cut wages as price dropped for silver due to huge influx of silver. Mill in wallace, ID was destroyed. Govt. sent troops to round up and put in bullpen for 6 months. Cycled for a decade with rising protests and being repressed. 1899 hijacked a train towards kellog w/dynamite aboard. Nicknamed dynamite express. Blew up 1/2 million smelter. Gov. Steunenburg was blew up. Arrested Haywood but was aquited. Main person caught and life in state pen.

Wobblies Campaigns - Free Speech Fight

launched public education campaign on street as job agencies were ripping off workers charging $1 to send them to a job that was already filled sometimes. City made rule that cant speak without a permit on streets. Wobblies protested and sent many to crowd jail to overflowing. Pres. Taft visited by Spokane and gave speech. Protestors said he needed to be arrested by the law then. Mayor Pratt and Thompson negotiated a deal. Released prisoners and no law suit filed against city.

Wobblies Campaigns - Everett Massacre

1916 - Sheriff Donald McRae didn't want outside workers. Wobblies sent towards Seattle and were stopped halfway and beat up and left. Wobblies purchased boat and guns and went to Everett. Sheriff + deputies tried to stop them. Gunfire erupted, 5 wobblies and 2 deputies killed, many wounded. Nobody convicted as hard to prove who fired first.

Wobblies Campaigns - Seattle General Strike

1919 - Labor unrest. 65k city employees went on strike, paralyzing Seattle. No garbage or any service. Gov. sent troops in to suppress. Mayor Hanson was sent a mail bomb but didn't open it. Bolshevik revolution + communists were blamed and deported many immigrants.

Mine Owners Protective Association

Mine owners came together in response to labor unions. Used Pinkerton agency to have private army and to try to break protests. Charles Siringo was the main Pinkerton detective for the PNW

Gender equality and Womans rights

Idaho was 3rd state to grant women sufferage. Wa/Or later around 1910-1912. Seneca Falls marks beginning mid 1800's. Divorce and property rights. Tied with anti-slavery campaign. Decl. of Ind. for Women. in 1869 WY granted woman right to vote. In WA, Arthur Denny introduced Women Sufferage. Was 1 vote short the first time. Abigail Scott Durnway? single handedly started NW Women campaign in 1871. married early and lost farm because no rights. age 36 launched campain with Susan Anthony coming to NW. Newspaper 'The New Northwest' not much $ and was propaganda. Women on jury for Seattle-Tacoma riots. Opposition was led by corrupt business men politically. Didn't like temperance movement that coincided with Womens Rights.

Progressive Reform - Reform Spirit

1900-1917 - Try to regulate business + make life better. Building codes. Woodrow Wilson visited during campaign. William S U'Ren served one term in Oregon Senate. His influence was huge, persuading reform. Moved to Al because of Tuberculouses then came back and settled in OR. Political mentor was EW Bingham. began to educate OR.

Progressive Reform - Oregon System

Direct legislation League created by William U'Ren. Initiative and Referendum for system of direct legislation by the people. Initiative enabled citizens who obtained a specified number of signatures to put a proposal on the ballot. The referendum enabled citizens of the state to vote on whether to approve bills passed by the legislature. In 1902 Oregon’s citizens overwhelmingly approved and passed the Initiative and Referendum by a margin of 10:1. Direct Primary - power back to people as before party boss chose. Recall - people can decide to remove politician before term was up. MT adopted also, sweeping reforms.

Progressive Reform - People Power and Social Justice

WA was among first to introduce minimum wage and workmans compensation. Both were 'foreign ideas'. Protected Women from selling themselves. 1930's minimum wage adopted. Pipeo's bill for womens minimum wage. Workmens comp for mining and lumbering as was needed. 1/11 took cases to court. maryland was first then Washington. 1/10 could win.

Irrigation and Reclamation - Arid Land and Dry Farming

Most west is very arid, besides tiny strip on coast. Drops around 20 inches/yr. 18" rainfall in spokane, 8" yakima. land values depend on access to water. Dry Farming needed around 13" of rain to make it work. Store water in soil. After rain plow farm 14" deep so moisture in soil, then compact top to create a blanket. Vegitation would soak moisture to top. Promoted by Govt. and agriculture specialists in 19th century.

Irrigation and Reclamation - Early Efforts

Private enterprise - railroads invested in water projects as much land w/out water. Used boise river, payette river, Tieton river by yakima. Government Assistance - in early days didn't want big projects, used incentives instead. Timber Culture Act(1873): you can get another 1/4 mile plot from homestead act if you plant 40 acres of trees. Thought could bring moisture, didn't work. Desert land Act(1877) gave full mile of 4 plots trying to help agriculture. Carey Act(1894): 10 dryist states get tons of free land to give away to help others come as an incentive.

Newlands Act(1902) introduced by Francis Newland, creates U.S. Reclamation Service. Build irrigation projects and individuals work it for years. Gov. financed and owned. - Federal Projects Attempted: tried to dam Boise river and snake river basin in central ID. arrowlock and lucky peak dams on boise river. Was among highest in world at the time. irrigated treasure valley. Most people settled their. Dammed twin falls and along snake river. Problem for headwater dams is evaporation due to hot weather. helped along snake river plains and basin. Riparian Rights vs Prior Appropriation: east states can divert water in any way they want, but west it can only be used for common purpose. (animals and drinking water) WA state water is public use unless have water rights.

Alaska Klondyke

stampeders usually took train to seattle. was called that as was like gate opened and stampede coming out. Steamship portland came with 30 million gold, richest minestrike, to seattle. Strike was in Bonanza creek on klondyke river. One of first moving pictures was of ship leaving seattle for klondyke. Tappenandie was journalist covering klondyke stampede. Carmichael laid first claim, but one his relatives (jim?) pan handled one last time finding gold strike, right before they gave up. Skagway and Dyea ports arrived. 2 trails from ports, chyku(poor mans trail) very steep had to go on foot. White pass was easier but longer and able to use horses. At top had to make boats and travel down river to Dawson city. Many supplies lost due to harsh rapids. Eventually railway and steamships made the trip justa few days. Called city of whiskey, women, and gold. was known as 'paris of the north' 2k found gold out of 100k, only 200 significant amount.
