Salutary Neglect
"beneficial" negligence
England relaxed its enforcements of most regulations in return for the continued economic loyalty of the colonies. They were not supervised closely as long as raw materials were shipped out, and British goods were bought.
Mercantilism
- An economic system based on a countries ability to obtain gold and silver and establish a favorable balance of trade
- favorable balance of trade is to export more than you import (in this case, export products and import more gold and silver)
goal is to become self sufficient by living off of their colonies
Glorious Revolution
in order to avoid having a dynasty of Roman Catholic monarchs (everyone in the country preferred Protestantism) Parliament invited William of Orange to become (take over as) the king of England.
The aftermath of this is known as the Glorious Revolution, when Parliament passed a series of laws establishing its power over the king.
When the colonists of Massachusetts heard of this rebellion, they decided to have one of their own. They bloodlessly arrested Andros and his royal councilors.
Parliament rapidly restored the charter and made changes. They asked the king to appoint a non-Puritan governor of Massachusetts.
Navigation Acts
An act passed by Parliament (England's legislative body) to prevent colonists from making a profit by selling to other countries.
Rules:
- no country could trade with the colonies unless the goods went by colonial or English ship
- all ships needed to be manned by 3/4 English or Colonial crews
- certain goods could only be exported to England (tobacco, sugar, rice, molasses and furs)
- all goods had to be trade on an English port first
Results:
- English jobs are protected
- economy improves
- more ships (navy)
-cannot trade with other countries
Problems:
- smuggling and illegal trade
Domination of New England
When King James II came to power, he wanted to make colonial governments more obedient. So, he placed Northern colonies under single rule in Boston. Within three years, this area became one big colony known as the Domination of New England
Sir Edmund Andros was put in charge, and he was hated by all. This is because he questioned Puritans, enforced Navigation Acts, levied taxes and restricted local assemblies
Colonial Checks and Balances
Each colony had a governor who was appointed by the king. He served as the highest authority and had a wide range of powers. He even appointed his own advisory council and was above the local assembly which was elected by colonists (land-owning white males).
The policies were stronger in print than in practice. This is because the colonial assembly paid the governors salary. That was how they were able to influence him on his decision makings.
The colonies started to develop a taste for self-government which is one of many factors that will lead to the rebellion.
