Albany Regency
Close knit group of NY democratic republican politicians established by M. Van Buren from 1817ish-21. From the "Bucktail" faction which openly opposed then governor DeWitt Clinton, chief supporter of Eerie Canal. Ran New York state politics for 20 years.
*New principles of the political party as a abiding by majority rule & well-being of all members, rather than elites bound by family ties & political favors.
Martin Van Buren
Rose from humble beginnings in upstate NY to become state senator and eventual president.
-Revolutionized the political party with Second American Party System (put faith in masses, called for organization & discipline.)
Universal White Manhood Suffrage
By 1840:
-Over 90% of adult white males could vote.
-African American men were allowed to vote in only 5 New England states (Maine, NH, Vermont, Mass, and RI)
-Suffrage denied to women of any race.
Election of 1824*
Rose from humble beginnings in upstate NY to become state senator and eventual president.
-Revolutionized the political party with Second American Party System (put faith in masses, called for organization & discipline.)
"Corrupt Bargain"*
Election went to House, Clay gave his support to Quincy Adams, which resulted in him winning. Perfectly legal for him to do so as speaker of the house. However, when JQA later made him his secretary of state, Jacksonians accuse the two of striking a "corrupt bargain" in the house to assure a JQA victory.
John Quincy Adams*
Served one disastrous term as president living in the shadow of emerging popular democratic culture & Jacksonian values, despite successes as Monroe's SoS.
Nashville Junto*
Inspired by Albany Regency, instrumental in getting Jackson nominated for president in 1824.
"Age of the Common Man"*
Esp. Jackson's presidency, rise of popular democratic culture in politics. End of rule by social elites, etc. Helped by increase in publication of cheap party newspapers.
Election of 1828*
First with effects of the power & effectiveness of new popular democratic culture.
-Jackson, w. MVB as his campaign manager, won.
-Voter turnout twice that of previous election.
-Jackson’s party the democrats (from democratic republicans) vs. JQA w/ National Republican (distinguished from earlier Jeffersonian).
-Campaigning on own “undignified”, but supporters vigorously did so, NR’s making Jackson out to be a murdering, illiterate backwoodsman adulterer / Jackson’s supporters called JQA representative of “purse-proud aristocracy” .
-John C. Calhoun ran as Jackson’s VP, despite being the VP of JQA, the opposition
(Shows transition, new loyalty lines would soon not allow for this)
-Jackson had to maintain a coalition of North, South, and West in order to win, despite national heroic image….
Democrats*
Jackson’s party (from democratic republicans), first in election of 1828.
