How is the pulse related to the beating of the heart? |
Pulse is the throbbing of blood rushing into the arteries when lower chambers contract. |
How are the right and left sides of the heart alike? |
Both fill with blood in the atriums. Both pump blood out of the ventricles. |
How are the right and left sides of the heart different? |
Right side transports blood carrying CO2 and wastes Left side transports blood carrying O2 and nutrients |
What is the difference between an artery and a vein? |
Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away from heart (oxygen-rich) Veins are blood vessels that carry blood to the heart (oxygen-poor) |
What is the job of the capillaries? |
They connect the smallest arteries with the smallest veins |
Plasma? |
Yellow liquid that contains water, nutrients, wastes, and salts |
Red blood cells? |
Transport O2 and CO2 |
White blood cells? |
Fight germs |
Platelets? |
Clot blood |
If a donor has type A blood, what type must the recipient have? |
A or AB |
Which blood type can receive any blood types? |
AB (Universal recipient) |
Which blood type is considered the universal donor? Why? |
Type O because it can be given to any other blood type |
Explain how the lungs form a connection between the excretory and circulatory system. |
Lungs are part of the respiratory system. They also remove wastes from the body. Blood carries the waste gas CO2 to the lungs where it is exhaled. |
How might reduced kidney function affect a person's blood? |
If a person's kidney cannot filter as much blood, the blood will contain more wastes |
How do you think drinking plenty of water helps the kidneys do their job? |
Waste materials are dissolved in water in the body |
Explain the role of nephrons in the filtering of blood. |
Nephrons are the filtering units of the kidney. Blood passes through the nephron and is filtered under pressure |
How does the skin help the body get rid of wastes? |
Skin removes waste and water by sweating |
How do you think that burned skin changes the skin's ability to get rid of wastes? |
The pores and sweat glands can be damaged by burns. Extra fluid can leak out through the damaged skin |
What is the main function of sweating? |
To cool the body |
Explain how sweating works to cool the body. |
*When you get hot, more blood is delivered to the surface of the skin by the capillaries. *Water moves to the sweat glands and reaches the surface as sweat. *Water evaporates from the skin and carries the heat away. |
What happens to skin when the brain receives a signal that it's cold? |
*Small muscles at the bottom of each hair contract pulling the hair straight up. *Blood vessels deep within the skin become narrower. |
