SACRUM
wedge shaped, comprised of 5 individual bones fused together and labeled S1-S5.
HOW MANY FOREARM IN THE SACRUM?
8
Articulating facet
with L5
COCCYX
tailbone; composed of 3-4 fused bones.
sacrum and coccyx are part of
the vertebral column.
SACRO-ILIAC JOINT
junction between the sacrum and the ilium, part synovial, part fibrous (iliac side is fibrocartilage, sacral surface is hyaline)
ILIAC SIDE OF SACRO-ILIAC IS
fibrocratilage
SACRAL SURFACE OF THE SACRO-ILIAC IS
hyaline
Nutation or sacral flexion occurs when
the base (top) of the sacrum moves anteriorly and inferiorly. (forward and down) This causes the inferior or lower portion of the sacrum and coccyx to move posteriorly.
Anterior tilt of the sacrum results in
the base (top) of the sacrum moving anteriorly while the apex moves posteriorly.
Nutation occurs with
trunk flexion or hip extension.
Counternutation or sacral extension occurs when
the base (top) of the sacrum moves posteriorly and superiorly (back and up) causing the tip of the coccyx to move anteriorly.
Counternutation occurs with
trunk extension or hip flexion.
Sacrotuberous Ligament
stretches between ischial tuberosity and edge of the sacrum. Deep to gluteus maximus. This ligament is strong and broad.
Posterior Sacroiliac Ligaments
supports the union of the posterior sacrum and ilium. Attachments are from sacrum to area on ilium near PSIS.
